Description
Cliff View Cottages are a pair of cottages, originally probably dating to the late 18th century or early 19th century, and significantly renovated in 1978. They are constructed of plastered stone rubble, potentially with some cob, and have stone rubble stacks topped with 19th and 20th century brick. The roof is thatched, with slate replacing the thatch to the rear.
The cottages were originally planned as a pair facing south-east. The left-hand cottage (now No. 1) has a two-room plan, while the right-hand cottage (now No. 2) has a three-room plan. A shared axial stack in the party wall serves back-to-back fireplaces. The left room of No. 1 has a rear corner stack. No. 2 incorporates the former structure of two cottages, plus a single-room cottage which originally stood at the right end (formerly No. 3 Cliff View Cottages). A disused stack formerly existed on this section. Both cottages are two storeys high and likely feature integral outshots across the rear.
The exterior has a five-window front with 19th and 20th century replacement casement windows, which have glazing bars. The original doorways remain, all fitted with 1978 doors - the outer doors are plank, and the central one is glazed. The roof is gable-ended to the right and half-hipped to the left. The interior was not inspected, but a small amount of exposed carpentry is reported to be plainly finished. Group value derives from the cottages' contribution to the wider character of the area.
