Description
Church Cottages is a pair of cottages dating from the late 17th century to early 18th century, with a probable extension in the 19th century. The cottages are built from rendered stone rubble and cob, topped with a gable-ended asbestos slate roof and featuring two axial rubble stacks. Originally, the left-hand pair of cottages likely each had one room heated by a single axial stack, with a very small unheated service room at the opposite end. A further two-room cottage was added to the right-hand end, equipped with a stack at its left-hand end. At some point, likely in the 20th century, the two left-hand cottages were converted into one.
The cottages are two storeys high with an asymmetrical five-window front, where No. 1 has three windows. The early 20th-century windows are two-light casements with glazing bars. No. 1 features a 20th-century plank door at the center and a lean-to porch at the left-hand end, which has a similar door. Towards the right-hand end, there are two adjoining 20th-century part-glazed doors. The rear elevation has irregular very small openings and is recessed beyond the inner axial stack where the building was extended.
Inside No. 1, there are two back-to-back fireplaces with fairly insubstantial timber lintels that have a narrow chamfer and run-out stops. The left-hand fireplace includes an oven that retains its iron door.
