Description
The National School in Bratton Clovelly is a village hall that was originally built as a school in 1837. The building features walls made of slate and sandstone rubble, with sandstone quoins, and has a gable-ended slate roof. It is designed with a rectangular, single-room plan and has a two-window front, showcasing original three-light casements that have a two-centred head to each light, supported by wooden lintels.
At the center of the front is an original gabled porch that includes a four-centred arched sandstone doorway, complete with a hoodmould and recessed spandrels. The porch is fitted with contemporary double plank doors that have studded vertical ribs. Above the doorway, there is a stone plaque that reads "1837 National School," carved in high relief. The rear elevation mirrors the front with two identical windows. A carved stone cornice runs beneath the eaves. The interior has not been inspected.
