Description

Brattonia Cottage and Forge Cottage are a pair of cottages, originally likely one house, dating from the 17th century and extended probably in the late 18th or early 19th century. They have rendered cob walls and a gable-ended roof that is mainly thatched, with the left-hand end slated. The building features two gable end stacks with brick shafts. The original layout is unclear but likely consisted of two rooms, with the main heated room on the right and a service room on the left. The structure was extended by adding one heated room, likely when it was divided into two houses.

The cottages are two storeys high and have an asymmetrical four-window front, with two windows for each cottage. Brattonia Cottage has 19th-century small-paned two-light casements on the first floor and mid-20th-century two-light metal-framed casements on the ground floor. There is a 20th-century panelled and part-glazed door to the right of centre. Forge Cottage, to the right, features 19th-century three-light small-paned casements with H-L hinges on the first floor in small openings, and a 20th-century three-light casement with glazing bars below to the right. On the ground floor to the left, there is a 20th-century wooden porch with a glazed door.

Projecting from the centre of the building is a single-storey mid-19th-century outbuilding. The interior was inaccessible at the time of the survey but is likely to contain early features such as open fireplaces and possibly original roof timbers.
