Description
Winder Cottage is an early 17th-century cottage located in Bratton. It was formerly known as Coggins Cottage, associated with Bratton Court. The cottage is built with rubble walls covered in render, and has a double Roman tiled roof. A stone stack is located in the right gable end. The plan is of a two-cell design with a lobby entry. The windows feature 17th-century ovolo moulded mullions. The main elevation has walls raised to accommodate two three-light mullioned windows. A ground-floor window on the left has eroded; a three-light window is centrally placed, and a peaked doorframe is on the right, with a plank door. The right return features a small two-light window with ovolo moulding, serving as a stair light. Inside, the cottage has chamfered lateral beams with scroll stops. Winder stairs are located to the left of the stack. A lobby is situated on the right, and the original entrance is now through a later addition at the rear. The upper storey was not visible during the survey. It is a good example of an early 17th-century cottage.
