Description

The Knapp is a farmhouse, now a dwelling, that dates back to the 16th century. It was enlarged in the 17th century and underwent further alterations and enlargement in the mid-19th century. The building features a mix of rendered and roughcast rubble and cob, topped with triple ridge tile roofs. Notable architectural elements include a large lateral stack beside the left gable end, as well as stacks on the left return and right gable end.

The north front of the building is two storeys high and has a symmetrical arrangement of bays, with a 1:2:1 configuration. The outer bays are gable fronted, and on the first floor, there is a three-light octagonal mullioned window on the left, a central leaded iron casement, and a small 20th-century window to the right. The right gable end features a wooden casement. On the ground floor, the left side has a three-light ovolo moulded mullioned window, while the right side has a three-light Tudor arch head casement. There is also a semicircular headed door frame, which may have been reset, leading to a plank door, and a two-light Tudor arch head window located in the re-entrant angle.

The long left return has three bays and may have originally been longer, as the walls continue south. The interior has not been seen but is reported to contain three pairs of cruck trusses in the west range with very large bay lengths, as well as an ovolo moulded lintel over the fireplace in the lateral stack.
