Description
Springfield Cottage in Willsden is a farmhouse that has been converted into two dwellings. It likely dates back to the late medieval period, with alterations and partial rebuilding occurring in the 16th century, and further changes made in the 20th century. The building is constructed from red sandstone random rubble with some cob and features a thatched roof that is hipped to the left. There is a lateral stack with a slate-roofed bread oven located to the right of the entrance, and a brick stack on the gable end at the rear, which also has a bread oven.
The southeast front of the cottage is two storeys high and primarily features 20th-century casement windows. On the left side of the crosswing, there is a two-light window, and to the right of the lateral stack, there is a gabled dormer bay projection. The ground floor on the left has a leaded three-light window, and the entrance is accessed through a triple ridge-tiled porch situated between the lateral stack and the crosswing, featuring a plank door and two 20th-century windows beyond.
On the rear elevation, there is a gable-fronted bay on the right with two small windows above the bread oven projection, and a blocked cross passage doorway to the left. Although the interior has not been seen, it is reported to contain a stoke blackened cruck truss from the original open hall house and a clean jointed cruck truss in the crosswing, along with beams that have step and run-out stops.
