Description
This building is a pair of detached cottages that have been linked to form one dwelling. They date from the 18th century, with alterations made in the mid-19th century and an extension added in the late 20th century. The cottages are constructed from red sandstone random rubble and feature thatched roofs with external stacks at the gable ends. The unusual layout consists of two single-cell cottages set diagonally, connected by a lower-roofed block that extends at the rear.
The building is two storeys high, with 19th and 20th century leaded casements. The left-hand block has a three-light casement on the first floor and a four-light casement below it, which is set under a stone relieving arch. There is a full-height stepped buttress on the right return and a rendered gable end that has a lower independently roofed bay. This bay features a two-light casement on the first floor and a ground floor window with a Tudor arch head to the left of a plank door, which is sheltered by a porch with a corrugated iron roof supported by wooden columns. The gable end of the right-hand block is set at an angle and is lit by two-light casements, with the right return having one bay with two and three-light windows.
The interiors have not been seen, but it is reported that there is a stair projection concealed in the extension and a blocked doorway in the right-hand cottage, suggesting a similar plan that may have included stairs, which are now missing. Overall, the building is noted for its charming composition.
