Description

This building is a farmhouse that has been converted into two dwellings, known as Cottage (National Trust Estate Nos 95 and 96). It dates from the 17th century but has been altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. The structure is made of random rubble local stone, with some parts rendered, and features a thatched roof that is hipped to the left. There is a brick stack at the right gable end, a lateral stack with a bread oven projection to the left of the entrance, and a circular stack rising at the rear towards the center.

The layout suggests it was originally a three-cell farmhouse with a cross passage, which has been extended by one bay to the left to create two two-cell cottages, with an outshot at the rear. The building is one and a half storeys high and has a layout of one bay, three bays, one bay, and one bay. The first floor features all two-light dormers that rise below the eaves, except for the second bay on the right, which has an inserted ogee-headed light above the entrance to the right-hand cottage. On the ground floor, there is a recessed bay on the left, two two-light casements to the left of the stack, an entrance to the right, and two-light casements flanking the second entrance. The interior has not been seen. This building was formerly known as Knowle Farmhouse.
