Description
Laurel Cottage is a cottage, originally likely a pair, dating from the early 18th century. It has rendered cob and stone rubble walls and a gable-ended corrugated iron roof. There is a central axial rendered rubble stack, which suggests it was originally two cottages with a central stack and back-to-back fireplaces in the main rooms, along with small unheated service rooms at each end. When converted into a single house, the partitions between the principal and service rooms were removed. The cottage is two storeys high and features an asymmetrical front with two windows, which are late 19th or early 20th century casements with small panes. The ground floor has three windows, with the central one having a slate hood above, indicating it may have once been a doorway. There is a one-storey 19th-century addition projecting from the front of the right-hand end, which was originally a wash-house or similar outbuilding but now serves as part of the accommodation and includes a porch with a 20th-century plank door. The interior, which was not accessible during the survey, is known to contain two open fireplaces with square wooden lintels, one of which has an oven. At the back of the left-hand room, there is a small 18th-century cupboard with a fielded panel door, and the ceiling features insubstantial plain beams.
