Description

The Copper Key Inn, originally likely a farmhouse, dates from the 17th century, with possible earlier origins, an addition from the 18th century, and alterations made in the 20th century. The building has rendered cob walls and a thatched roof, which is gabled at the left end and hipped at the front of the wing. There is a brick axial stack that is offset from the ridge of the left-hand range.

The original plan likely featured a three-room layout with a through passage, where the hall stack backs onto the passage. This may have been inserted into an open hall, as suggested by its offset position. The wing added at the front of the right-hand end is probably from the 18th century. Original partitions were removed in the 20th century, likely during the conversion to an inn.

The exterior is two storeys tall and has an asymmetrical L-shaped front with three windows on each range, primarily consisting of 20th-century two and three-light casements, some with leaded panes. There is a single light 20th-century window on the left side of the ground floor without glazing bars. To its right, there is a 20th-century glazed door with a tall small-paned 20th-century window beyond it. The wing projects to the right and features a late 19th-century four-pane sash window at its higher end on the first floor. Below this window is a 20th-century glazed door beneath a lean-to door hood, with another part-glazed door to the right of centre.

Inside, one 17th-century chamfered ceiling beam is visible on the ground floor, while other early features may be hidden by later modernizations. It is possible that early roof timbers are still intact.
