Description
Warehouse, dating from 1845, with later 19th-century extensions. The building has stone rubble walls and a gable ended slate roof. It follows a long rectangular plan, originally likely with a single large room on each floor, with a later 19th-century extension added to the left end. The original section has a symmetrical 10-window front with central double doors on each floor and a sack hoist at the top, sheltered by a gabled canopy. Most windows are original 2-light casements, some with overlapping panes instead of traditional glazing bars. The 6-window extension on the left end is of similar form, featuring a first-floor loading door towards the left-hand end. The rear elevation mirrors the front. The interior was not inspected. This warehouse remains remarkably unaltered and continues to fulfill its original function, representing a significant example of its period. The North Tawton woollen mill was established around 1750 by John Fulford of Crediton, and the Fulford family remained in possession until its purchase by Gilbert Vicary in 1842. The site was later sold to Messrs Shore of Halifax, who closed the mill in 1930.
