Description

Uplands is a house that was originally two cottages, dating from the late 17th century, with some modernizations from the 19th and 20th centuries. It features plastered cob on stone rubble footings, with cob stacks likely topped with brick from the 19th and 20th centuries, and a thatched roof. The house has a two-room plan and faces south, created by joining two contemporary one-room plan cottages, each with a gable-end stack. It is two storeys high, with secondary two-storey outshots at the rear.

The exterior has an irregular three-window front. The left-end window on the first floor is original, made of oak with flat-faced mullions, and contains rectangular panes of leaded glass, some of which are ancient and tinged green. The other windows are 20th-century casements with glazing bars. Originally, each cottage had a front doorway near the end wall; currently, a window blocks the original right-end doorway, which has been replaced by a doorway further left. The left-end doorway remains in its original position and both doorways feature 19th-century part-glazed plank doors behind 20th-century gabled porches. The main roof is gable-ended.

Inside, both fireplaces are of the same size and have similar oak-framed fronts. The axial beam in the left room is chamfered with scroll stops, while the crossbeam in the right room is chamfered with run-out stops. The roof was not inspected, but the bases of straight principals visible on the first floor likely indicate original A-frame trusses. The house features plain joinery details throughout, which are old but cannot be accurately dated.
