Description
TALATON TALEWATER SY 09 NE 6/196 Uplands - II -
House, originally 2 cottages. Late C17 with some C19 and C20 modernisation. Plastered cob on stone rubble footings; probably cob stacks topped with C19 and C20 brick; thatch roof. Plan: 2-room plan house facing south. It was made by uniting a pair of contemporary 1-room plan cottages, each with a gable-end stack. 2 storeys with secondary 2-storey outshots to rear. Exterior: irregular 3-window front. The first floor left-end window is original; it is oak-framed with flat-faced mullions and contains rectangular panes of leaded glass, some of them ancient and tinged green. The other windows are C20 casements with glazing bars. Originally it seems each cottage had a front doorway near the end wall. Thus a window is blocking the original right end doorway and this has been replaced by a doorway further left. The left end doorway is in the original position. Both contain C19 part-glazed plank doors behind C20 gabled porches. The lain roof is gable-ended. Interior: both fireplaces are the same size and have similar oak-framed fronts. The left room axial beam is chamfered with scroll stops and the right room crossbeam is chamfererd with runout stops. Roof was not inspected although the bases of straight principals show on the first floor, probably from original A-frame trusses. Throughout the house is plain joinery detail, old but impossible to date accurately.
