Description
TALATON SY 09 NE 6/192 Talaton House - GV II
House. Early C19, maybe late C17 - early C18 origins. Plastered brick, brick stacks and chimneyshafts, slate roof. Plan: house is set in own grounds and faces open countryside to south, backing onto the village. It appears to have an L-plan. The front block has a principal rooms either side of the central entrance hall and rear stair. The right room has a rear lateral stack and the left room has a gable-end stack. Since no full inspection was possible at the time of this survey the rest of the house layout is not clear. The front block maybe double depth and there appears to be a kitchen block projecting to rear. Although the house appears to be early C19, a modernised late C17 - early C18 house is suspected. 2 storeys. Exterior: symmetrical 3-window front arranged around a central doorway. The part- glazed door here is probably a replacement but the flat-roofed Tuscan porch in front is early C19, so too are the windows, all 12-pane sashes and the ground floor ones in the centre of tripartite sash windows. Plain eaves and roof is gable-ended. Interior: was not available for inspection at the time of this survey although early C19 and maybe late C17 - early C18, carpentry, joinery and other detail is suspected. Although the building is shielded from the village by trees, the large house with its grounds are an important component of the village.
