Description
Church Cottage is a cottage that probably dates from the 18th century. It is constructed of plastered cob on stone rubble footings, with stone rubble or cob stacks topped with 19th-century brick, and has a thatched roof. The cottage has a two-room plan and is built alongside the lane leading to the Church of St James, oriented with the south end as the front. The front parlour features a lateral stack on the left side, while the kitchen behind has a projecting gable-end stack. The building stands two storeys high with secondary lean-to outshots along the east side.
On the exterior, there is one window on each floor. The ground floor casement may be original and contains rectangular panes of leaded glass, with another window at first floor level in the rear end. The upper window is a late 19th to early 20th-century casement with glazing bars. The front doorway is located to the right of the window and features a 19th-century part-glazed six-panel door under a contemporary flat-roofed hood supported by shaped brackets. The main roof is half-hipped at the front and gable-ended at the rear. The interior was not available for inspection at the time of the survey. Church Cottage is part of an exceptionally good group of listed buildings in the vicinity of the Church of St James.
