Description

Hollytree Cottage is a cottage, dating from the late 17th to early 18th century, with refurbishment in the mid to late 19th century. It is constructed of plastered cob on stone rubble footings, with stone rubble stacks topped with late 19th century brick and one Rolle Estate chimney pot. The roof is thatched. The cottage forms part of a terrace facing east onto High Street.

It has an L-shaped layout, with a two-room front block containing a central cross passage and stairs rising to the right, against the rear wall. A rear service block extends at a right angle behind the right-hand (northern) room. The left room has a rear lateral stack, and the right front room has an end stack in a shared party wall with number 15 High Street. A projecting lateral stack is present on the rear block. The front has a symmetrical facade with two 2-light casement windows on each storey; the ground floor windows are taller, all with rectangular panes and diagonal bars. A 20th-century part-glazed panelled door sits within a central doorway, covered by a contemporary segmental hood, and is topped by a recessed oval panel. The roof runs continuously with neighboring cottages, and the rear block has a gable end.

The interior largely reflects the 19th-century refurbishment, with joinery and chimneypieces dating from that period. However, there are indications of the original late 17th to early 18th century structure. The left room features an exposed crossbeam, and the rear block has an axial beam, both with neat, deep, stop-chamfered soffits with run-out stops. The roofspace is inaccessible, but the scantling of the principals suggests that the original A-frame truss roof remains intact. Also present are a couple of original two-fielded panel doors. The cottage is situated within a group of attractive and varied listed buildings that line High Street, leading up to the Church of All Saints.
