Description
The Talaton War Memorial is a First World War memorial that was erected in 1922 and altered after the Second World War. It is made of granite and is located prominently in the churchyard to the south of the Church of St James, which is a Grade I listed building. It is near the Sanne headstone and two Webb headstones, both of which are Grade II listed.
The memorial features a carved-granite plain Latin cross with a gently tapering octagonal shaft, set on a square plinth and a two-stepped octagonal base. On the south face of the plinth, there is a main inscription in leaded lettering that reads: 1914-1918 / TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY / OF THE BRAVE MEN OF THIS PARISH / WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WARS, followed by the names of 13 fallen soldiers. The north face of the plinth is inscribed with 1939-1945 and lists the names of three men who fell in the Second World War.
