Description

Lees Farmhouse is a 17th-century farmhouse that was refurbished and enlarged in the early to mid-19th century. It is constructed of plastered cob on stone rubble footings, featuring one cob stack and one brick stack, both topped with 19th and 20th-century brick, and has a thatched roof. The farmhouse faces south-south-west and has a two-room plan with a central through-passage. The left room was the former kitchen, which includes a large axial stack that backs onto the passage, with a narrow dairy or pantry partitioned off at the left end. The right room serves as the parlour and has an end stack. The original 17th-century work is primarily found in the kitchen and dairy area, suggesting it may have been a complete 17th-century cottage. The current layout largely results from the early to mid-19th-century refurbishment, during which the passage and parlour were added, and a rear outshot is now used as a kitchen. The farmhouse has two storeys and a lean-to outshot at the rear.

The exterior features a symmetrical two-window front with early to mid-19th-century small 16-pane sashes arranged around a central front doorway that includes a part-glazed 20th-century door behind a contemporary gabled porch. The roof is hipped at both ends.

Inside, the interior reflects significant 19th and 20th-century modernisations, with 17th-century features limited to the former kitchen and dairy section. The kitchen fireplace is lined with 19th-century brick, but its plain oak lintel may be original. The main crossbeam has been replaced in the 20th century, while the chamfered half beam remains original. The roof over this section is supported by a side-pegged jointed cruck truss, although the roof space is not accessible.
