Description

Harris's Farmhouse is a farmhouse dated 1876, constructed from local hand-made Flemish bond red brick, which features black patches that indicate how the bricks were laid in the clamp kiln. The building has brick stacks and chimney shafts, topped with a thatch roof. The layout is not entirely clear, as only the exterior was inspected during the survey. The farmhouse faces south-south-west and appears to have a three-room-and-through-passage plan. The left room is likely the former kitchen, which has a projecting gable-end stack. There is an unheated service room, possibly a former dairy or buttery, alongside the passage, with a parlour at the right end that also has a gable-end stack.

The exterior is attractive, featuring a regular but not symmetrical four-window front with 19th-century casements that have glazing bars. The ground floor windows have brick arches above them, with the two left windows having low segmental arches. The passage front doorway is located to the right of center and contains a 19th-century door. The rear wall includes a Beerstone plaque inscribed with the date 1687 and the initials of Nicholas and Petranella Harris. The roof is gable-ended.

While the interior was not available for inspection, it is believed to be structurally intact but modernized in the 19th century. The parlour fireplace is noted to have a richly moulded oak lintel or mantel-shelf. Harris's Farmhouse is significant as an early brick building in Devon and is the earliest dated brick farmhouse in the county. It is part of a notable group of listed buildings near the Church of St James.
