Description
White Cottage is a cottage dating from the 18th century or early 19th century. It is built with plastered cob on stone rubble footings, featuring stone rubble and brick stacks topped with 19th and 20th-century brick, and has a thatched roof. The cottage has a small two-room layout facing south, with the larger room on the left (west) side, which includes an axial stack that backs onto the right room. The right room has an end stack that was added in the 20th century. The stairs, also a 20th-century addition, are located at the rear of the right room. The building is two storeys high and has secondary lean-to outshots at the rear and on the right end.
The exterior is not quite symmetrical with a two-window front. The ground floor windows are UPVC casements with glazing bars, installed around 1986. The first-floor windows are 19th-century casements with glazing bars, with the left window featuring unusually small rectangular panes. The roof is tall, steeply pitched, and hipped at both ends. Inside, no carpentry details are visible, and the fireplaces are blocked by 20th-century grates. The roof was not inspected during the survey. White Cottage is part of an attractive group of listed buildings in the village of Clyst Hydon.
