Description
Clyst Hydon County Primary School is a school building dated 1861. It is constructed from local sandstone rubble with dressed volcanic trap quoins and Bathstone ashlar details. The building features a stone stack with a 19th-century brick chimney shaft and a 20th-century tile roof, which was originally slate with bands of scallop-shaped slates. The school has a T-plan layout, with the main block facing southwest and containing one large classroom. The entrance porch is located at the right (northeast) end, while a one-room block projects at right angles to the rear, which may be a secondary addition. There is a stack situated between the two blocks, and both are single-storey structures.
The main block has a symmetrical five-window front, with all windows made of Bathstone featuring two-centred arch heads and Y-tracery. The original glazing bar pattern is preserved only in the tracery. The central window is a large three-light window, flanked by pairs of two-light windows. Above this central window is a gable containing a plaque with a coat of arms. The roof is gable-ended, and all gables have shaped kneelers and coping. The left end of the building has a large four-light window in the same style as the front, while a similar two-light window is found in the rear wall. The entrance porch, located at the right end, is gabled and accessed from the rear through plank double doors. Its gable-end features a stone window with an elliptical head, containing two lights with Y-tracery, and above it is a plaque inscribed "AD 1861." The rear block mirrors the main block's style, but its windows are square-headed.
The interior was not inspected. The front playground is elevated above the road level and is supported by a local stone rubble wall. This charming small village school is part of a group of listed buildings near the Church of St Andrew.
