Description
West Serston is a house that was formerly two cottages, dating from the early 18th century. The main structure is made of plastered cob on stone rubble footings, rising to the first floor, with a cob stack topped by 19th-century brick and a thatched roof. There is a rear kitchen outshot constructed from plastered 20th-century concrete blocks, covered by an interlocking concrete tile roof. Originally, the building consisted of two cottages facing south. The eastern cottage retains its original layout, featuring a large heated room and a small lobby with a winder stair. The western cottage has been converted into one large room. Both cottages had mirror-image plans with a central axial stack serving back-to-back fireplaces. The rear outshots were rebuilt around 1978.
The house is two storeys tall and has an overall four-window front with 19th and 20th-century replacement casements that include glazing bars. Each former cottage has a symmetrical two-window front with a central doorway, both now fitted with 20th-century doors. The right cottage has a 20th-century monopitch porch with a concrete tile roof. The main roof is steeply pitched and hipped at both ends. Inside, much of the original carpentry remains intact. The main rooms feature large crossbeams with neat unstopped soffit-chamfers. The fireplaces are constructed from squared stone rubble with plain oak lintels and include ovens that were relined in the 19th century. The winder stair at the right end may be mostly original. The roof structure consists of A-frame trusses with pegged and nailed lap-jointed collars.
