Description
The Kings Arms Inn is likely late 18th- or early 19th-century public house. It is constructed of plastered cob and rubble, with stone rubble stacks and plastered brick chimney shafts, and has a slate roof. The main block faces south and originally contained one room on either side of a large central carriageway. The western room has a rear lateral stack, whilst the eastern room has an axial stack backing onto the carriageway. A service block, at a right angle to the main building, is located to the rear of the right-hand room. This block contains bars, storage areas, rooms above, and a cellar, originally used as stables and stores. 19th-century additions were made at right angles to the rear of the left-hand room.
The front of the building is symmetrical, with three windows, originally containing 16-pane sashes. The stucco front is incised to resemble ashlar. The carriageway has large 19th-century double plank doors at each end, and a 19th-century doorcase featuring flanking pilasters, ornate cast iron brackets supporting a flat hood with a moulded entablature.
The interior features plain carpentry details, including a large rubble fireplace with a plain oak lintel resting on oak pads in the left-hand bar. The main block has a mid-19th century king post roof truss. The building’s layout, alongside the adjacent Barakel, suggests that the Kings Arms Inn was partly built within the upper end of a 16th-century hall house, with a party wall serving as the upper hall partition. According to the owner, the site was previously occupied by 17th-century maltings.
