Description

Richmond Cottage is a mid-17th century cottage located in Bow. It is constructed of plastered cob on rubble footings, with a cob stack topped with 20th-century brick, and has a thatched roof.

The house is originally a two-room plan, facing north, with a roughly central passage running through. The larger, western room is heated by a stack shared with the adjacent Hillside property. A 19th-century service extension was added to the rear of the right room. The facade presents a balanced two-window arrangement with late 19th-century casement windows; a two-light window is on the left, and a three-light window on the right. A contemporary four-panel door is located slightly left of centre, leading to the passage. The roof is gable-ended on the left and continuous with Hillside on the right.

The larger right room contains a cob fireplace, now lined with stone and featuring a replacement timber lintel. There are seats on either side of the fireplace, and a large opening on the left side, which likely led to a now-demolished oven or smoking chamber. A crossbeam is stop-chamfered with unusual scroll-nick stops. The roof structure consists of A-frame trusses with pegged lap-jointed collars.
