Description
A pair of houses with shops, dating from the early to mid-19th century, located on Barnstaple Street in Bideford. The buildings have solid rendered walls and a slate roof, with rendered chimneys on the shared party wall and at the left gable end. The houses are two storeys high, with a garret at number 28. Number 27 has a single window on the front, while number 28 has two. Each house features a round-arched doorway on the right side of the ground floor. A further round-arched doorway, likely leading to the rear of the property, is located at the extreme right-hand end of the pair. Number 27 has flat architraves over its window and door openings. Number 28 has a six-panelled front door, with the two bottom panels flush. To the left of the door is an eight-paned shop window, flanked by pilasters and an entablature, the cornice being supported at each end by a console. The upper-storey windows are six-paned sash windows. A gabled dormer is present at number 28, featuring a simple wooden window and bargeboards. The interior of the buildings has not been inspected. The buildings are included on the list for their contribution to the character of the surrounding area.
