Description
Bethel Free Church, including Number 12, is a chapel and adjacent house that were incorporated behind a single facade. Built in 1877 and enlarged in 1888, the building features a solid rendered front, with the left side wall of the chapel made of stone rubble. It has slate roofs and a large chimney of old red brick located at the right-hand end of the ridge at Number 12, which appears to be shared with Number 14. There is also a late 19th century or early 20th century red-brick chimney on top of the front wall of Number 12, to the left.
The structure is two storeys high, with a gabled chapel front on the left that is four windows wide, while Number 12 on the right is three windows wide. The ground storey of the combined front has a horizontally channelled finish and is topped with a raised band. The upper storey features raised quoins at each end. The chapel has deeply recessed two-panelled double doors at each end of the ground storey, with the upper panels having raised centres and the lower ones being flush. The door to Number 12, located between the two right-hand ground-storey windows, has four flush panels, and there is a secondary door, replacing the left-hand window, with four moulded panels.
Both storeys have windows with two-paned sashes that include margin panes; the second storey windows are adorned with moulded architraves. The gable of the chapel has lightly moulded coping, kneelers, and a tall cross-like finial. In the centre of the gable is a large panel with a moulded frame and the inscription "BETHEL" in high relief. Number 12 features a heavily moulded eaves cornice. The rear wall of Number 12, which is visible from the former railway station, has six-paned sash windows in the upper storey. The interior has not been inspected. This building is included for its group value.
