Description

45, 46, and 47 Torrington Street are a terrace of three houses built in the early to mid 19th century. They feature solid rendered walls with faint traces of masonry markings and slate roofs. Each house has two chimneys located on the left side wall, with brick chimneys at Nos 45 and 46, and a rendered chimney at No 47. The houses have a double-depth plan and are two storeys tall with garrets. Each house has one window on the left side of each storey and a round-arched doorway to the right. The doors are four-panelled, with the two lower panels flush; No 46 has an old knocker. The windows are six-paned sashes. Each house also has a dormer window with a pent roof; No 46 features large-scale slating on the sides, while No 45 has a two-light wood casement with two panes per light. The rear walls, visible from Bideford Bridge to the north and a former slipway to the south, have six-paned sashes in the upper storeys at Nos 46 and 47, and sashes with margin-panes and horns in the upper storey at No 45. All three houses have dormer windows similar to those at the front, with slated sides at Nos 45 and 46, and two-light wood casements at Nos 45 and 47 with six panes per light (the centre glazing-bar has been removed from the right-hand light at No 47), while No 46 has two panes per light. The interiors have not been inspected, but No 46 features a half-glazed inner front door with two solid moulded panels at the bottom and two glazed panels with segmental heads above.
