Description

The Swan Inn is a public house located on Torrington Street in East-The-Water, Bideford. It was built in the early 19th century, with the rear part possibly extended or rebuilt in the early to mid-19th century. The building features solid rendered walls and a slate roof that is hipped at both the front and back. The front section has distinctive pierced, red crested ridge-tiles. There are rendered chimneys located on the right side wall of each part of the building, as well as on the front gable of the rear section.

The inn is two storeys tall at the front and three storeys at the rear, with a three-window range; the middle window on the second storey is blind. The central doorway is round-arched with a chamfered raised surround, featuring a 20th-century six-panelled door and a fanlight with radial bars. The windows are fitted with 6-paned sashes, and there is a moulded eaves cornice. The right side wall has several small windows with glazing bars, including a Yorkshire sash. The rear elevation, which is clearly visible from Bideford Bridge, has windows with barred sashes, with 8 over 8 panes on the second storey and 6 over 6 panes on the third storey. The moulded eaves cornice continues around the side wall facing the bridge. The interior of the building has not been inspected. The Swan Inn occupies an important position at the east end of Bideford Bridge.
