Description
This is a house located at 26 Barnstaple Street in Bideford, dating from the mid-19th century, likely covering an earlier structure. It features solid rendered walls and a slate roof, with the front section gabled and adorned with crested ridge tiles, while the rear section has a ridge parallel to the street and a catslide roof behind. There are two rendered chimneys on the right side wall. The building has a double-depth right-angle plan with a rear lean-to and stands two storeys high with a garret. The front facade consists of a one-window range, with the ground and second-storey windows slightly offset to the right, and a long, irregularly-windowed return to Emberry's Drang on the left. The front has raised quoins, and the windows are framed with flat eared architraves that have slightly pointed tops. They are two-paned box-framed sashes with horns and a single upright glazing-bar. The gable window features a bracketed sill, and the shaped and pierced bargeboards are decorated with winged cherub-heads below each bargeboard and a small lion at the apex of the gable, which are likely later additions. The return front has been altered but includes a doorway topped by a cornice on consoles, along with two windows featuring six-paned sashes on the second storey, one of which is in the rear lean-to. The interior has not been inspected.
