Description
A pair of houses forming a single range, likely dating from the late 17th century or early 18th century, with possible origins even earlier. The houses were re-windowed in the 19th and 20th centuries. The walls are unusually thick, rendered over stone and cob construction, with visible masonry markings. The roof is slate, with a hipped section at the right-hand end. The building has an L-shaped plan, with a rear wing extending to the right and a lower wing to the left.
The houses are two storeys high with a four-window front. Number 17 has a doorway on the right-hand side, and double-hung sash windows with horns in each storey to the left. The upper sashes of these windows have six panes, while the lower sashes have two. Number 18 has a central doorway, with a plain 20th-century window to the left, which may have been a former doorway. Above the doorway is a single-light window, with a pair of two-light windows on either side in each storey. All these windows have eight-paned sashes in box frames, presumed to be late 20th-century replacements. A raised surround is visible around the left-hand window on each floor, with the ground-floor lintel projecting beyond the jambs and having a slightly pointed top. A bracketed eaves cornice runs along the whole front.
The interior, which has not been inspected, is reported to include 17th-century panelling, probably reset, early 18th-century plaster cornicing, and the exposed feet of old trusses.
