Description

Springfield Terrace is a terrace of seven houses built in the mid-19th century, set back from Barnstaple Street in East-the-Water, Bideford, behind the Royal Hotel and a former railway line. The houses have rendered frontages and slate roofs. Red-brick chimneys, some with decorative pots, rise from the party walls. They are arranged with a double-depth plan and stand three storeys high. Each house features a single canted bay window on the second storey, with a bracketed cornice. The third storey has two windows, while the ground floor has one window in the centre, with a doorway to the extreme left. Doorways and windows are edged with moulded architraves. Pilasters with Corinthian capitals are positioned between the upper-storey fronts and at each end of the building. The original doors are four-panelled, with a later 20th-century wooden door at No. 7. Sashes are present throughout, although late 20th-century metal-framed windows have been installed in the canted bays of Nos. 2-4. Ground-storey windows at Nos. 1-3 and 5 retain their original six-paned sashes with margin panes. Matching sashes are found in the canted bay at No. 1, with the side-lights featuring two-paned sashes and margin panes. The canted bay at No. 5 has later eight-paned sashes. A bracketed eaves cornice runs along the top of the building. A ground-floor verandah, supported by chamfered wood posts, extends along the front of the terrace; the remains of a decorative wooden fringe are visible at the left-hand end. The interior was not inspected. The terrace was not depicted on Wood’s 1842 map of Bideford.
