Description
The Sole Bay Inn is a public house located in Southwold, dating from around 1835 with later alterations and a late 19th-century inn front. It is constructed of gault brick and features a pantile roof with two brick stacks.
The exterior presents a two-storey, three-bay front, with the outer corners defined by large stuccoed pilasters. The public house frontage on the right is framed by pilasters that support a fascia board and cornice. There is a half-glazed door with a three-pane fanlight to the right of a plate-glass window divided by two stiles. To the left, there is a four-panel door with a three-pane fanlight and one 0/0 horned sash window with a gauged skewback arch. On the first floor, there are two 6/6 unhorned sash windows under gauged skewback arches. Between these windows is an arched niche that contains a naval signal mast with a lantern. The building features a prominent moulded eaves cornice beneath a plain stuccoed parapet that masks the roof and is painted with the inn's name.
On the right side, there is a two-bay front with a blocked central doorway, a blocked window to the right, and one 0/0 horned sash window to the left. On the first floor, there are two 6/6 unhorned sash windows. The interior has been altered.
