Description

Lantern Cottage (number 52) is a row of seven houses dating to circa 1770, with later alterations. The houses are constructed of rendered and colourwashed brick, with a roof of black-glazed pantiles, including a moulded brick kneeler at the left end, and an external stack at the left end, along with four ridge stacks.

The original seven-window front has been altered to a nine-window front by the insertion of additional windows. Numbers 42 and 44 have paired doors from the late 19th century, with overlights, and 10/10 horned sash windows to the left and right. The first floor of these houses has one 6/6 unhorned sash window to each side. Number 46 has a replacement four-panel door, with a plank passageway door, and two 20th-century 10/10 horned sashes to the right. The first floor of number 46 has two 3/6 horned sashes, and a pair of small casements under the eaves. Number 48 has a replacement six-panel door, one 10/10 horned sash to the left, and a 6/6 unhorned sash window on the first floor. Number 50 has a half-glazed door, one 6/6 unhorned sash window to the right, and a similar sash window to the centre of the first floor. Number 52, the subject of this description, has a glazed door, one 6/6 unhorned sash window to the right, and a similar sash window on the first floor above. Number 54 has a six-panel door and one 6/6 unhorned sash window to the right on each floor. Six raking dormers are present, each with a two-light casement; those to numbers 44 and 46 are top-hung replacements. The interior was not inspected.
