Description

The Blacksmiths Arms Public House is a 18th-century building, originally constructed in 1741, with a 20th-century addition at the rear. It features solid rendered walls and a slate roof, with rendered chimneys on each gable end and a small red brick chimney on the rear wall. The building stands two storeys tall, with a single-storey structure attached to the right-hand end. The main façade has a three-window range, where the middle window is narrower than the outer two. The single-storey section has a wide window flanked by two doorways.

At the center of the main front is a round-arched doorway, flanked by pilasters and an entablature, leading to a six-panelled door with panelled reveals, where the bottom panels are flush. The windows are barred sashes, with 10 over 10 panes at each end and 6 over 6 panes in the center. The middle window features a keystone with incised initials and the date 1 M M 1741. The entire front is flanked by giant Doric pilasters, with sections of architrave and frieze above, surmounted by a continuous, heavily-moulded cornice below the eaves. The single-storey building has a triple-sashed window with 8 over 8 panes and 4 over 4 panes in the sidelights. The front is finished with a parapet. The interior was inspected only in the ground-floor bar, which appears to have been significantly altered in the late 20th century.
