Description
A pair of houses, likely built in the late 18th century, now comprising a house and shop. The buildings are constructed from coursed sandstone rubble with quoins, and have a slate and composition tile roof. They are rectangular in shape, with a double-depth plan. The houses are three storeys high, and have 1+2 windows. Rusticated quoins and a moulded gutter cornice are prominent features.
Number 57 features a raised doorway to the left, accessed by four steps, with a plain surround and a board door. It has one window on each floor. Number 59 has a 19th-century double-fronted shop front with a recessed glazed entrance flanked by windows with altered glazing. The shop front has a pilastered surround with a cornice. A doorway to the right, possibly a former window, has a glazed and panelled door with an overlight, all set beneath a lintel that matches the windows. There are two windows on each floor above the shop front.
The windows are vertical-rectangular on the ground and first floors, with wedge lintels that imitate voussoirs with raised keystones. The windows on the second floor are square, and all have raised sills on small consoles and altered glazing. A ridge chimney is located at the junction of the two houses.
At the rear, the fenestration is similar, except that Number 59 has three windows on each floor. Various small additions have been made at ground floor level. The buildings form a group with Number 55 adjoining to the left.
