Description
The Owl Inn is a public house located in Up Holland, likely dating from the early 17th century, although it has been remodeled, altered, and enlarged over time. The building features remnants of timber-framing in the east gable wall, while the rest is constructed from coursed squared sandstone rubble and topped with slate roofs. It has an irregular plan, consisting of a former two-unit main range with a rear wing and additional structures at the rear and right-hand end. The inn is two storeys high and has two windows. There is a blocked round-headed doorway to the left of centre, which has dressed voussoirs and a raised keystone. The ground floor has enlarged square windows with raised sills and wedge lintels, along with transomed three-light casements. The first floor features two pairs of small coupled nine-pane sashed windows.
The left gable wall has rendered cladding at the ground floor, but above that, the original timber-framing is visible, including corner posts, two intermediate posts, one rail, angle-braces in the upper panels, and a principal-rafter roof truss with vertical struts to the principals. At the right-hand end of the building, there is a single-storey continuation. Inside, the interior has been remodeled, but the second bay retains two large quarter-round moulded lateral beams and a chamfered beam at the junction with the rear wing. The first bay has a similar stop-chamfered lateral beam that ends at a 20th-century beam, which has replaced a former longitudinal partition.
