Description

Priory House is a house located on Church Street in Up Holland. It is likely a mid-18th century enlargement of an earlier structure and has undergone alterations and restoration. The building is constructed of coursed squared sandstone and features a stone slate roof with brick chimneys. It has a rectangular double-depth, double-fronted plan with side wings, standing two storeys high with attics and five windows that are almost symmetrical.

The exterior includes a wooden cornice with modillions, a central square-headed doorway flanked by fluted pilasters, a triglyph frieze, and a cornice above a six-panel door with a three-pane overlight. The ground floor has four 12-pane sashed windows, while the first floor has five windows, all with raised sills and flat-arched heads. The central window on the first floor is unhorned, as are the windows to the right, which have exposed boxes. The upper window on the right has a higher sill than the others at this level. There is a gable chimney on the left and another chimney on the front slope in line with the fourth window. A low service wing is present on the left, with the remains of another wing on the right. The rear of the house features various sashed windows, mostly 12-paned.

Inside, the lateral partition wall between the centre and the right side is as thick as the external front and back walls, with slightly different floor levels on the right, suggesting it is an addition. The interior includes a good doglegged staircase leading to the attic, primarily of mid-18th century design, featuring an open string, scrolled brackets, two turned balusters per tread, and a ramped moulded handrail. The top flight of the staircase is in a 17th-century style, with a closed string, stout turned balusters, and an unramped moulded handrail. Additionally, there are fielded panelled doors on both main floors.
