Description
A pair of houses with shops on the ground floor, dating from the 1830s. The buildings are plastered with a slate roof and end stacks with brick shafts. The plan is deep, with each house originally one room wide. They have three storeys and an asymmetrical 2:2-window arrangement. A moulded eaves board runs along the top.
Number 85 has a 20th-century shop front with pilasters featuring sunk panels and brackets alongside a deep fascia. Number 86 has an Edwardian shop front, with a wide recessed door to the left, a canted plate-glass shop window with a doorway to the right and an overlight, and a further door to the accommodation on the far right, above which is a blocked overlight with margin panes. One pilaster has an incised Greek key ornament. A fascia extends across the front, projecting forward over the shop window, which also has a recess for a sunblind. The first and second floors have 12-pane sashes; the first-floor sashes in number 85 have been reglazed as 6 over 1-pane sashes. Number 85 has 20th-century attic dormers.
The interior of number 85 has been gutted for shop use, but other interesting features may survive within the buildings.
