Description
The iron gates and piers located between St Anne's Chapel and the Parish Hall were likely constructed in 1863. They are made of open-work cast iron and consist of a pair of gates set between square-section piers. The gates feature decorative elements such as quatrefoils, ogee arches, and spear-heads, while the piers are adorned with 4-leaved flowers and other Gothic motifs. Some of the decorative elements appear to have been replaced with flat-fronted replicas.
The northern pier is topped with a central crocketed pinnacle, accompanied by smaller pinnacles at each corner, though the smaller ones on the east side have been replaced with simpler versions. The southern pier has had all its pinnacles replaced in a similar manner.
These gates do not span the entire width of the Row and have never done so. They may have originally been the gates from the Butcher's Row end of Church Lane, which the Town Council removed in 1889 or 1890 without the churchwarden's consent. In January 1890, there was an intention to relocate the gates, but no decision had been made at that time.
