Description

No. 81 Boutport Street is a former bakery and shop, now empty, built between 1898 and 1899 by F.W. Petter of Barnstaple. The building is constructed of red brick with stone and terracotta dressings and features a tiled roof adorned with decorative pierced ridge-tiles. It has a large red brick chimney on each side wall and stands three storeys tall with a garret.

The façade showcases a three-window range in the Flemish Renaissance style. The ground storey includes a wide round-arched shop front on the right, with voussoirs alternating between brick and stone, and a similar shop front on the left that was formerly a cart entrance with panelled double doors. The upper storeys are distinguished by five-sided pilasters that flank and separate the windows, with moulded string courses above each storey. The two right-hand bays feature enriched terracotta panels below the windows, while the left-hand bay has a canted bay window with a richly carved stone base and an ogee-shaped leaded roof topped with a finial.

Above the two right-hand bays, there is a large dormer gable containing three round-arched windows, with sunk, round-headed panels in the spandrels. At the apex of the gable is a terracotta cartouche, which is surmounted by a carved stone frieze and a segmental pediment. The interior has not been inspected. This building was originally erected for Mr. F.W. Raymond, a baker, whose business occupied the premises until the late 1980s.
