Description
No. 84 High Street is a house and shop built in 1902 by FW Petter of Barnstaple for Mr. JT White, a pianoforte dealer. The building features a painted brick front with cement dressings and a hipped slated roof. A red brick chimney is located on the right-hand side wall.
The structure has three storeys and a three-window range. The shop front, which dates from the late 20th century, retains the original fluted pilasters at each end, topped with large consoles. The upper-storey windows are adorned with eared architraves and cills supported by small brackets with a fringe of guttae. The taller second-storey windows feature friezes with triangular and segmental pediments. The front of the building includes rusticated cement quoins and a top entablature with a dentilled cornice.
The interior has not been inspected. Historically, a previous building on this site, which had much lower storey levels, is depicted in a photograph from 1886.
