Description
Paige's Almshouses is a range of four almshouses built in 1656, with 20th-century additions to the left and rear. They were founded by Elizabeth Paige. The front is made of painted brick in a roughly English bond pattern, with a small section of painted stone rubble at the left end. The roof is slated. Originally, these almshouses provided four dwellings for eight inmates and are two storeys high.
The main building features four windows on each storey and four doorways. The left section has one window on the upper storey. The doorways have double ovolo-moulded, square-headed wood frames with elaborately carved stops, and ribbed and studded plank doors. The second door from the left closely resembles the original. Each doorway is topped with a slated wood canopy. The restored windows in the ground storey have four lights, while those above have three. They feature ovolo-moulded wood mullions with diamond-shaped leaded panes, and each window has a casement with ornate iron hinges. The window in the left section has a two-light wood casement with pegged joists, likely dating from the late 17th century or later. The left gable wall has two mullioned windows similar to those in the main range.
These almshouses significantly contribute to the 17th-century character of Church Lane and are located adjacent to Horwood's Almshouses.
