Description

21 and 22 St Edmund Street are a pair of small houses that also contain shops, built in the early 19th century, possibly based on earlier structures. The buildings are rendered and have slate roofs.

The exterior features two storeys and an attic, with each house having one window. Number 21 has a tripartite plain sash window in a flush box and mullions above a three-pane display front, which is flanked by fluted pilasters and topped with a dentil cornice. To the right, there is a six-panel door with a transom light set in deep reveals. The building has a small plinth, and the modified cornice includes small dentils, below a blocking course and parapet.

Number 22 features an early flat-roofed dormer above a bow oriel window with a tripartite sash that has only vertical glazing bars and a dentil cornice. It also has a three-pane bow shop front with very thin mullions. To the left of the shop front is a part-glazed door with a transom light, and another door opening has been cut near the right party wall. A plain band has replaced a former cornice, located below the blocking course and parapet. No chimney stacks are visible.

Inside, the ground floor of Number 21 has two large plastered beams and a 19th-century reeded fire surround. Number 22 appears to have been subdivided, with a new staircase located to the right at the rear. These houses were built together and likely incorporate some earlier materials, as the rear wall is said to be made of good Portland ashlar, which is thought to have originally been part of a front wall, with a small garden facing the street.
