Description

The Duke of Cornwall Public House is a public house with 17th century fabric that was refaced in the late 18th century and features a late 19th century display front. It is constructed of stone with a rendered and scribed front and has a slate roof. The building is part of a larger group from the 17th century that extends to Maiden Street and Custom House Quay, with external evidence visible in the coped gable on the right side.

The structure has two storeys and two windows. On the first floor, there are two large tripartite sash windows with eight, twelve, and eight panes, which have flush mullions and boxes, and are topped with stopped label moulds but lack sills. Below this, the late 19th century public house front features a pilaster surround with a shallow fascia and cornice. A central six-panel door, which is one step up, is flanked by a two-light and a three-light window with thin mullions and slightly rounded heads, complete with a sill and stall-riser. To the left, there is another panelled, part-glazed door on a step. The wider wall section on the right indicates the location of internal fireplaces. The gable is coped and rests on a prominent kneeler, with a brick stack that has been raised to clear the adjacent higher Guildhall.

The early interiors of the building have not survived, but the group, which includes the Ship Inn on Maiden Street, was originally constructed in good ashlar with mullioned casements. From the street, the Duke of Cornwall now appears to be an 18th century building.
