Description

The Royal Oak Public House is an early 19th-century public house located on Custom House Quay in Weymouth. The building is rendered with a slate roof and stands three storeys high with an attic. It features a distinctive corner design at the junction with St Mary Street, where a full-height quadrant contains the main entrance. The facade has three sets of two windows, all with glazing-bar sashes. On the Quay front, there are two 16-pane windows and one 12-pane window above two 16-pane windows, along with an off-centre arched doorway that has a plain fanlight. The quadrant corner includes a full-height recessed panel with a recessed door accessed by one stone step. The St Mary Street side has an early flat-roofed dormer with a 6-pane sash window above a 12-pane and a 16-pane window on the first floor, and two 12-pane windows on the ground floor, along with a 20th-century door in a square opening. The building features a plinth and a blocking course with a parapet above a plain band that wraps around the quadrant, which has a hipped end. To the left of the Quay front, there is a gable stack. The interior has not been inspected, but the exterior is a complete example of a characteristically Late Georgian public house.
