Description

Numbers 68 and 70, along with an attached wall, are a pair of houses located at the end of a row, dating from around 1820 to 1840. The houses are rendered with concrete tile roofing. They are two storeys and have an attic, originally with two and one windows respectively. Number 68 now has a large, flat-roofed dormer added in the 20th century; Number 70 retains an original six-pane sash dormer. Each house features an eight, twelve, and eight pane sash bow oriel window with a moulded cornice. Number 68 has a twelve-pane sash window in the reveals to the right, along with a 20th-century shop front, while Number 70 has a 19th-century pilaster shop front with a wide glazed door and a shallow transom light to the right. Each house has an outer gable stack. Number 68’s gable, facing Albert Street, is plain and rendered and has a paired sash at first floor and a blocked former arched doorway, together with a low, slated wing with a door and two windows. Number 70’s return gable is plain, and the rear is brick. The interior of Number 68 includes iron posts on the ground floor supporting the first floor, some removed interior partitions, and a Victorian staircase with a partly missing balustrade. Behind Number 70 is an attached rubble wall raised in brick with brick coping, approximately 10 metres long, extending to a small two-storey gabled range.
