Description

Carter's Cottages is a terrace of five cottages, which were formerly almshouses, built in 1835, as indicated by an inscribed stone. The cottages are constructed from squared and coursed Portland stone and feature a slate roof. They form a straight row of single-depth cottages with a low-pitched hipped roof and a flat-roofed rear extension, positioned gable-end to Park Street.

No. 14 is double-fronted, while the other cottages have a single bay. The buildings are two storeys high with six windows, all set in pointed arches with stone voussoirs. The windows include a small two-light casement, which retains a horizontal bar in No. 18 only, and is situated under a plain pointed transom light. In No. 16, the first-floor casement has been replaced by a single square light. The first-floor windows are notably set well below the eaves level.

All six doors have been replaced and are located under voussoirs with a slight central key. No. 14 features a large 20th-century porch, while Nos. 15 and 16 have lean-to slate hoods. The terrace includes two square ridge stacks, one located centrally and the other towards the left end. The right end of the terrace has a lower outbuilding with a slated roof. The flat-roofed extension is shallow and fills a 1.5-meter gap between the almshouses and the adjacent buildings on Park Street. The interior has not been inspected.
