Description

Numbers 53 and 55 are a pair of houses located on Bristol Street in Malmesbury, dating from the late 18th century but with earlier origins. They are built from squared, coursed limestone rubble with limestone dressings, featuring ashlar gable stacks and a stone slate double-pile roof. The houses have a double-depth plan with rear services and stand two storeys tall, with a basement and attic, arranged in a 2:1 window range.

Architectural details include quoins, coped gables, and flush dressed surrounds to the openings. Number 53 has a left-hand doorway with a 4-panel door, while Number 55 is symmetrical with a central round-arched doorway, a fanlight, and a 6-panel door. Both houses feature 6/6-pane sash windows, eaves dormers with segmental heads, and top-hung casements. The left-hand return of Number 53 has a 20th-century timber canted bay, and there are 19th and 20th-century rear extensions.

Inside Number 53, there is a central stair hall with stick balusters and column newels, and a door leading through the thick rear wall to the kitchen extension. The property also includes subsidiary features such as attached iron railings, a gate, and a dwarf wall that borders the front raised pavement, which has a left-hand round-arched basement doorway at road level leading to a similar vaulted passage.
