Description

Numbers 42 and 44 are a pair of houses dating to the late 18th and 19th centuries. They are built of squared, coursed limestone rubble, with brick gable stacks and a stone slate roof. The houses have a double-depth plan and are two storeys high, with an attic and basement. Each house has a single window range. The symmetrical front elevation features doorways with cambered heads, set on either side of a party wall and with 20th-century doors. Number 42 has 6/6-pane sash windows, while Number 44 has late 20th-century casements. There are two dormers with cambered heads and double casements. The interior has not been inspected. At the rear of Number 42, a shallow, D-shaped pool fed by a spring is set within a rough arched recess in the wall; this is known as St Aldhelm's Well.
