Description

This is an 18th-century house with a 20th-century extension, located on Gloucester Street, Malmesbury. The building is constructed of limestone rubble with limestone dressings, a brick gable stack on the right-hand side, and a stone slate roof. It follows a single-room plan and is two storeys high with a basement, featuring a one-window front. The front has large irregular quoins to the left and right, above the eaves of the adjacent property. A left-hand doorway has a 4-panel door, a large former shop window with glazing bars, and a small casement window beneath the eaves. A dormer window is visible at the rear.

Inside, features include a basement passage on the right-hand side and a winder staircase to the left of the fireplace. Stone flooring remains from the basement, although it has been partly removed. Windows have splayed reveals, and the roof is supported by collar trusses. The basement contains a blocked window looking onto the street, and a large fireplace with splayed reveals and a bressumer.

A mid-19th century cast-iron name plate is affixed above the doorway and reads "GLOUCESTER STREET." Historical records suggest the original ground level of Gloucester Street was approximately 1 to 2 meters lower than it is now, which would have allowed for the basement window. A cut-and-cover drain formerly ran down towards the river.
